The ELS Language Center – Shanghai is ELS's only official language center in China and the only intensive English program in China with ACCET accreditation. We are located in a historic compound in the former French Concession - the heart of the expat community in Shanghai with many international shops and activities located nearby. We have American management and teaching staff with decades of experience in China. Our class sizes are small, with a maximum of 12 students. We focus primarily on English for Academic Purposes (EAP) training and are scholastic in approach and outlook.

ELS is America's largest provider of academic English instruction, with over 60 language centers throughout the United States. Instructors in Shanghai teach English to students who plan to attend an American university or high school.
Committed, experienced English-language teaching professionals are invited to join the ELS Shanghai team. Our preference is for teachers who speak with a clear North American accent and have first-hand knowledge and experience with the American education system. Temporary contract positions through early September are available immediately. Long term contract positions based on future need are also possible. Availability for possible weekend hours is a prerequisite. Curriculum and Evaluation:

Curriculum is based on student’s placement. Class materials include textbook, Objectives and Evaluation Criteria (OEC),on-line teacher resources, teacher guides, standardized testing and daily lesson plans. All of our classrooms have wireless Internet access and A/V equipment. Previously developed supplemental materials are also available.

Evaluation is based on standard ELS grading policies. Teachers are required to adhere to Evaluation criteria listed on the class OEC and to maintain grading and attendance data in an online grade book on a weekly basis. Teachers are also required to provide written feedback on each student’s performance on a bi-monthly basis. Students take a standard final exam in all of the core classes at the end of each session.

ELS instructors are responsible for performing the following additional duties:

1. To teach assigned class based on the Objectives and Evaluation criteria listed on the OEC.
2. To prepare lesson plans, exercises and tests.
3. To test, evaluate and counsel the student regarding his/her classroom performance.
4. To coordinate instruction, attendance records and evaluation with other teachers.
5. To complete administrative paperwork as required or requested.
6. To maintain performance and attendance records.
7. To maintain Center resource materials and files.
8. To participate in administrative meetings and professional development activities.
9. To develop and/or refine teaching materials at the local level.

Qualifications for this position include:

1. B.A./B.S. is required. B.A./B.S. in TESOL, education, or related field is preferred.
2. TEFL/TESOL certification with is required. ELS recognizes TEFL certificates that consist of a minimum of 100 hours of classroom instruction and include an observed practical component. CELTA, M.A. in TESOL or Applied Linguistics are preferred
3. A minimum of two years of teaching experience, with preference given to teachers with experience relevant to the ELS curriculum and methodologies (communicative)
4. Cultural sensitivity; personal satisfaction derived from and enthusiasm for teaching international students; empathy for the problems of learning English as a foreign language; good communication and organizational skills; Willingness to give students individual attention and feedback.
